For more than a century, a big cinema image has meant a projector, a lens and a screen. That assumption is beginning to look rather less permanent.
Selected commercial cinemas are beginning to adopt direct-view LED screens in place of conventional projection systems, while the same technology is steadily working its way down towards residential screen sizes.

Commercial cinema LED is scaling upwards into increasingly large auditoriums, while residential MicroLED is moving in the opposite direction as finer pixel pitches bring native 4K to more practical home theatre sizes. At the same time, manufacturers are addressing some of the technology’s traditional installation challenges, including heat, power consumption and, in commercial cinemas, acoustic transparency.
